The Thomas R. Smith Award for Excellence was started in 2009 as a way to honor Dr. Tom Smith, a longtime choral director and ACDA leader in our state – and recognize our colleagues who, like Dr. Smith, have made outstanding contributions to the choral art. Each year, nominations are solicited state-wide, and the Alabama ACDA board votes to determine the recipient.
Dr. Thomas R. Smith is Professor Emeritus at Auburn University, where he served as chair of the Music Department from 2000 until his retirement in 2006, and prior to that as Director of Choral Activities from 1972 to 2000. In ACDA he has been a state and division President and was state Treasurer for many years. He has served as a church Minister of Music continuously for almost 50 years and still conducts the Alabama Singing Men and the East Alabama Youth Chorale.
Nominees for the Thomas R. Smith Award for Excellence must have been active in choral music for a minimum of 25 years, distinguishing themselves in the field of choral music and consistently demonstrating the highest musical standards. They must also have provided leadership in the choral arts and earned the respect of colleagues and students.

Established in 2013, the Robert E. Wright, Jr. Award for Exceptional Service was started to honor the memory of our colleague Robert and those who share his passion of service to ACDA. This award is not an annual award, but is rather given when exceptional service warrants this recognition. The Alabama ACDA Board votes when to confer an award.
Nominees for the Robert E. Wright, Jr. Award for Exceptional Service must have been active in choral music in Alabama for a minimum of 15 years. They must have contributed exceptional service to Alabama ACDA, going above and beyond the call of duty. And the nominee must be nominated by a member in good standing of Alabama ACDA, though it is not a requirement that the nominee be a member of Alabama ACDA.
